The procedure for phased rehabilitation of abandoned sites is described using the example of the former gas works sites. The fundamental problem is the same for coking plants, so that the document can also be used for such sites.
Chapter 1 explains the gas production and cleaning. In particular, the type and quantity of residual substances produced during these processes and the ways in which they were frequently treated and disposed of are described. From these, the potential contamination areas are deduced.
Chapters 2 and 3 contain practical advice on performing the indicative and detailed investigations.
Chapter 4 gives a preview of the remediation investigations.
